Worried?

I am more worried about just getting the paper done. I am also worried about the research proposal as to how much we should have and what all different kinds of things should be in it. I no the basics but i did not know if there should be pictures from the site, things like that.

Week 12

I will probably use the theme method and incorporate a little bit of topic organization. Chronological order would not work well for mine in the sense of how my sources work together with the description of my group. Theme would be the best as i have certain themes in which i plan to cover in my paper. Some of these themes fit into broader topics and that would be the bet way to do a few of the things.

Week 11

The hardest thing in doing this project has been finding information that has directly to do with my culture. I have been able to find information that dances around my subject so it has been a stretch in some cases but I have been able to get through it. If I could start over I would probably keep my culture but do a different aspect of it then I have chosen. The blogs have helped since they have let me keep track of how my feelings on my subculture have differed since the beginning of this project.

Box 30

I looked at an undergraduate thesis regarding how architecture is related to Ball State and about its architecture program. The other was about a site outside of Ball State that upper classmen worked on in their studio. These two project's work hand and hand in the sense that how Ball States program has to do with what kind of projects they do. This explains why they do projects outside of Ball State's campus and even outside of Muncie at times.

Week 10 defs

Sparky - spring architecture enrollment for first year program

Farky - fall architecture enrollment for first year program

Desk Crit - when the professor comes to a students desk to see what they have done and what they like and do not like about the work

DCM - Design Communications Media

CAP - College of Architecture and Planning

Most people that do not know this culture would defiantly not get the first two as they are used only to describe a small group of people in the organization. The third one is fairly self explanatory and was easy. The forth and fifth words are abbreviations and could easily be confusing unless one is familiar with the culture.

Week 7

In order to properly finish this project I need to do a bit more research. Interviews are going to be the next phase however. I have observed quit a bit and think that for the moment I have plenty of information from that perspective. Once I so a few interviews and see what information I can conclude from that then it will give me a more accurate estimation of how much more research and observation I need to conduct before I do my paper and finish this project. No matter what the out comes to from the interviews I will have to do some more research and observation, however to what extent is the question. I plan to interview a few different students and plan on interviewing a studio professor. After that I will look at the information and if I can not get enough information I might consider requesting a meeting with the head of the architecture department.

Box 18

The professors in the architecture studio seem to not do much, however they have a very important role. They make sure that students stay on task with the project and do not stray to far into there own world. They also make sure that the students learn what they need to learn form the assignments to do well in the future and that they understand why they are doing what they do. But even more importantly they act as a friend to help cop with all the stress and worrys of an architecture major that is like a parent that is a friend.

Version 2

This is a diagram of an architecture studio. Tables are lined up so each person is next to someone if not facing them. The room is small for the number of desks, making this a very close community. It also allows and encourages interaction with other students which is crucial in the teaching style that is prevalent at Ball State. The small aisles give just enough room for students and professors to maneuver but give plenty of room for students to have large desks to work at. The green lines show the most common areas of travel, while the grey shows area where light is let in. There is a very small amount of windows in the room to keep from distracting first year students and who are not used to the work load. The upper classmen architecture studios have larger rooms that are packed with desks and cabinets; they have windows that let in a small amount of light.

Version 1

This is a rough diagram of an architecture studio. The tables are lined up so that each person is next to someone if not facing them or in some cases both. The room is small for how many desks there are making this a very close community. It also allows and encourages interaction with other students which is crucial in the teaching style that is prevalent at Ball State. The small aisle ways give just enough room for students and professors to maneuver but give plenty of room for students to have bug desks to work at. The green lines show the most common areas of travel, which is not much, while the grey shows area where light is let in. There is a very small amount of windows in the room to keep from distracting first year students and who are not used to the work load. The architecture studios however are a bit different. Larger rooms that are still packed with desks and cabinets do have windows that let in a small amount of light for students that know the work load and are used to it who are less likely to be distracted by outside involvement.

Box 16

An open room that makes you feel as though you are always in the way. Trapped to never know what is going on outside of the room and to never see your friends again, depression, sadness, exhaustion, happiness, and goofy. Words that come to mind on a late night when you enter studio and see all of the students working vigorously to finish a project that no one that is not in architecture would consider anything or relevant to the same. The room is like a cool late fall day, the temperature is just cold enough to chill a person but not cool enough to cause discomfort. Emotions are seen yet not recognized at this point in the project. It is late and no one wants to be there yet everyone is and seem to be having a good time. You feel as an outsider as everyone acts as though they are with family or working with a best friend as they are. Despite the enormous amount of work ahead of them, and the decreasing amount of time no one seems to, well freak out. The room is terrible in the sense of making a person feeling at home yet because of the atmosphere people do not worry about getting a project done, instead they press on getting support from others and that keeps them from freaking out and not getting the objective completed.

Box 15

A sense of calmness flows through your body as you feel the warm sun shine through the trees and spot your face. A brief cool breeze hits your face that sooths your soul as you take in the brilliant greens and distant calls of the birds. The ground seems to mold to you feet as you walk on the dirt path, each blade of grass, limb, or bush that touches your body feels as though it has always been there like another arm or an eye. When moving through the woods you can not help but feel like a little kid again. You feel your youth come out and your mind begins to wonder about all that has ever happened and might happen soon. The calming, wondering feeling that this endeavor brings upon a person makes you feel as though you could stay there forever.

Box 12

I have a lot of privileges that some kids my age do not have. I have my own car thanks to hard work when I was younger. I had a good deal of fun in high school thanks to my friends and a lot of fun playing sports thanks to coaches and friends. Right now I have the privilege to attend Ball State for architecture which was due to hard work in high school and a lot of hard work at home during those years.

Week 6

From what I have read about most of the programs around the nation, I believe that most of the programs would be a lot different then Ball States. Ball State has a very distinct program and atmosphere for the architecture subculture. They are very unique in how they interact with one another and how the professors interact with the students. Several programs across the nation have certain attributes that are similar to Ball States however no two programs are entirely alike. Ball State’s program requires that the professors and students have a very special relationship, after awhile they become like family and develop a special bond. This is not just between the students but also the students and teachers. The students also seem to be some of the hardest working students on campus and you do not see that at many campuses across the nation.

Box 8

Not much surprised me about my group so far. From what I had heard before starting this project I had a basic idea of what the group would be like. The only thing that surprised me was the extent in which the sections are close. I expected them to be good friends but I underestimated the time they spent together and therefore underestimated how good of friends they were. They spend hours upon hour together so they have a very special relationship that I am sure others underestimate the same as I did.
What intrigued me the most is how the professors’ role is replaced by the students. When the Archie’s do a critique, the professor talks less then the students, all the professor does is guide they do not teach per say. Students help each other with projects and steer each other in different directions. The professor form what I have seen just seem to be there to keep students on track.
There was not really anything that disturbed me about my group. I thought that everything was fairly normal. The lack of sleep that some of the students get is a bit disturbing, however students that seem to display good time management seem to get plenty of sleep.

Week 5

Most of the sources I have gathered have been from professional magazines involving articles about the broad subject, not my specific subculture. However, I have found bits of articles that have information about my subculture but not whole articles. I have also found one book with mention and a few websites with small amounts of information about my subculture but over all it has all been about my overall culture. I am still searching and am about to start to use none academic search engines to try and find sources. I am going to focus on trying to find websites about my subculture since I have already searched through most of the magazines that we have on campus although I will also continue to search through those. I am going to attempt to interview a few of the senior professors as well to add to my research.

Box 9

After reading Mama Day I can tell that it is a story that has defiantly been rewritten over and over. I can think of a few different movies, although not there titles, that have the same basic story line or have one very similar. This kind of story interests a person and tells a specific story. It gives history yet an interesting story line making it ideal for movies or perhaps even knockoff books.
While the text was difficult to read and understand the first time it did clear up a little bit once I got started. There are still a few things that do not make much sense but do not take away from the reading enough to keep one from reading the story. The characters were very interesting and added a lot to the story. I do not think that the story would have been as strong and as interesting had it been written different or had the characters not been explained the way that they were.
The narrator seemed to interest me the most. The way that the information was explained and the attitude made me relate to the story and draw me in. This is one of the characters that is absolutely needed in the story to make it strong and pull the reader in.

Week 4

Academic resources are considered resources in which come from accredited sources or a professional in that field. For example, a university study would be an academic resource as to where wikipedia allows anyone to place information online with or without sources; this would be considered a non academic resource. Normally with academic resources someone has done research to write that article making it reliable. This is why professors want students to use them, they don’t want a student to use information for a paper that is not creditable and could be false. However, non accredited sources could be used for assignments that require insider information or personal input from others, such as blogs. Although these are not accredited sources that have reliable sources listed for information or not have committed any studies for the topic, they give a person an insiders view on the subject and get daily or personal information about the subject as opposed to statistics and data we can acquire feelings.

Field Notes Response

Architecture students spend a great deal of time together. Their studio class is a 4 hour class in which they do projects. Because they sped so much time there they are a very close group of people and learn to help each other with projects. Some of these project might be done 4 or even 5 times before a final is complete. The professors have a very close relationship with the students as well. They critique projects over and over before a final is due to help the student understand aspects of the project and to help them make a better grade. These students are very hardworking and seem to posses the same basic qualities. They all are creative and intelligent people that question the composition of everything and seem to think in a way unique to there major study. Their other classes seem to have the same feel as studio, small groups despite the fact they may have 70 students. Students are encouraged to participate and sometimes forced into it, this gives the professor a relationship as that found in studio.

  7. How accredited are the professors.
  8. How prepared are the students once they have completed this program for the job world.
  9. How accredited is this program nationally.
  10. What could you do to increase this accreditation.

week 3

I will be doing a great deal of my research in the architecture buildings since my subculture has to do with landscape architecture. Most people on campus say just about the same thing when they here architecture student, crazy and sleep deprived. People on campus know of the architect majors as the people that are never sleep and never quit working, or the smart people on campus that never leave the class room. I am in the CAP program I have not declared which major in this field I want to pursue, however I can tell you that they are not that far off on a few of these things. I do not have much experience with "la's" as they are called, landscape architects, but I can assume that they are just like the rest of us, overworked. CAP students, college of architecture and planning, are almost always working on projects for studio on top of all other school work therefore it could be said that we never leave the class room because if you go to a studio at 2 in the morning on almost any given night there will probably be someone in there working on a project.

test results

Over all I do agree with how my test turned out. I thought that there were a few of the scenarios that I prefer things from both spectrum's but that the overall conclusion was probably close. I do not think that the test is a "you are defiantly this or that", but more of a "you tend to be this."

ESTJ

Week 2

When I start to pick my subculture for this semester there are a few thing that I look for. One of the most important things that I look for is am I interested in it. If it is not something that I might find myself doing or joining one day, or something that just really fascinates me then I will not enjoy it and therefore will not want to work on it. I frankly do not care to learn anything about something that I do not like or find interesting, but if it is something that I like and will find I can eventually use then I am all for exploring and learning everything there is to know about it. The point of learning and doing this project is to learn about other people that are not like me, however that is the group I want to learn most about. I believe that in order to learn about others you must first learn about urself, therefore my goal in this to learn more about myself so I can learn about others.

box 11

When I think of the Design Build Experience, I have a few preconceived thoughts. One thought is about the type of people that would be on this team or in this group. Being through the architecture college, you some people would think of this group being a bunch of nerdy students with no life, however I am in the architecture program, although not part of this group and did not even know that it existed, i could tell you that my thought are alot different form other peoples. I first think of a general team or group being mostly second or third year student and not having much to do with upper class men or graduate students. They probably are not the normal "nerds" that everyone thinks of but are non the less the type that would have glasses and most likely not sports enthusiasts. Although this probably is not true when thinking of a group such as this I think of the people that win the science fair and are the big school people, in all the clubs and have no social life other then the activities they experience through it.
Although i say this about them, it very much sounds like something that i would be interested in. I was not into science fair or any school clubs other then sports in high school so I already have completely destroyed my first preconceived notions about this group. I love to design and build things and love to plan them out, hence why i am in the architecture program. It is extremely weird how we look at a situation and say "man I wish I was in that" but yet the people that are in it are the people that we do not want to be associated with.

everyday

The alarm clock goes off, i slam my hand down on the snooze button and go back to sleep. Five minuetes later this simple step is repeated. Then I wake up 15 minuetes later and think that I am late, so I jump up grab my stuff and go get ready. I come back 20 minuetes later to look down at the clock and realize that I set it 15 minuetes early and now I sit down and try to stay awake for another 20 minuetes before I go to class. I go to the CAP building and stay there all day, 8 in the morning till 9 that night. I draw and sketch, think and plan, and repeat. I come back to the room at 9:30 and do a bit of homework then watch a movie and hangout a little to have some fun, then I go to bed around 1 in the morning just to wake up the next day and do it all over again. Some will wonder why, others say I'm crazy, all I have to say is that I'm a Ball State architecture student.

  • love football and hot dogs
  • used to the wind
  • poor, or very low on cash
  • loves free stuff and will do anything to get it despite how cheap or useless
  • the nest

The people in the architecture department, or archies are known for there devotion. Always in studio the architecture building has become to be known as the bat cave where all the archies live. Although we do spend quit a bit of time in studio we do not live there and only the people that procrastinate are the ones constantly pulling the all nighters. Be a program of such high caliber as Ball State's, the students here are very hard working and loyal. Since we are all always working on projects very diligently, we get to know each other very well eventually getting to the point where class mates turn into family in which not seeing almost seems like a crime. Being college students we all are poor, or very low on money, so we learn to be creative not only in our work but in the materials we use to do the work. After awhile professors perfection expectations get to us so we do projects over and over meaning we need a lot of cheap material so we get even more creative and share ideas making us all even closer. In the end after all the projects are done and we are all sleep deprived and laughing from stupid jokes that are only funny because of the amount of sleep we've had, we have made tons of friends and had the best times of our lives, besides who else can say they hangout in the bat cave
